Natural stone sealing

Sealing is one of the first important steps to care and maintain natural stone. Sealing is often done prior to installation, sometimes sealing is implemented after installation is finished.

Why natural stone needs sealing?

In fact, natural stone is hardly affected by load capacity. It is most affected by corrosion. Corrosion of natural stone can be caused by chemical reactions which occur when stone is in aquatic environment contains large concentrations of carbon dioxide or other acids. Besides, stone contains many different minerals, therefore, if there is irregular thermal expansion, stone will also be adversely affected. In addition, natural stone are natural material with high porosity and water absorption from 0.5% to 3-4%. So inorganic and organic stains from industrial or living wastes accumulate on the surface or in the pores of stone are environments for growth of bacteria which can destroy stone by their acids.

As a result, natural stone need sealing to prevent water and the other liquids to absorb into stone which cause stains and damage the stone surface. Different project items use the different materials and installation methods. If natural stone is correctly and flexibly sealed, it will be sustainable with the life of the project. Good sealers will not change the original color of stone. To achieve the best performance, you should consult a specialist before sealing, then, select the prestigious company to implement sealing for your stone.

How to simply check the sealing?

You can check whether natural stone is well sealed or not by dropping a few drops of water on the stone surface. If the water absorbs immediately (without droplets on the stone surface) you should re-seal stone immediately. If the water forms droplets as small balls on stone surface, stone is well sealed.

Does sealed stone need regular care and maintenance?

Sealing is a precaution against water absorption and corruption of stone. However, to maintain the beauty of stone, beside sealing, regular care and maintenance are also essential. The easiest way is to prevent water and other liquids to be on the surface of stone. Clean up immediately when they appear.

When should we seal natural stone?

Most types of natural stone need to be sealed prior to installation. In particular, some types of stone like Limestone, Sandstone… are very porous material which can be easily absorbed by water from the mortar or adhesive so they must be sealed prior to installation.

When natural stone needs re-sealing?

If your stone is sealed with good sealers and correct methods, it will be protected over a period of 5 years in terms of correct using and caring as stated by natural stone providers. After 5 years, it is time to reseal your stone. You must remove the old sealed layer on stone surface before making the new one. This work ensures that you have increased life of your project for another 5 years with perfect aesthetic value.
